His Talk:

A Leap of Faith: Issues, Ideas, and Concepts

Developmental and systemic transitions are often the most complicated periods for clinicians and loved ones. An exploration of the dynamics of change, resistances to growth, and the facets that identify individuals with greater resilience versus fragility will be explored and discussed.    Participants will develop the ability to understand developmental, mental health, and trauma history as they relate to obstacles to developmental change and to a greater integration of interventions provided in treatment settings. At the conclusion of the discussion, participants will also develop a greater understanding of the importance of remaining curious about the process of change and in learning new ways to illuminate the bridge towards a path of wellness and growth.

At the conclusion, the participant will be able to:

1.      Define and identify systemic transitional planning models

2.      Explain the applicability of medical models to mental health discharge planning

3.      Explain the ways in which pathology and systems parallel difficulties in discharge planning

4.      Discuss the applicability of the RARE model into exceptional transitional care models

His talk:

A Trauma-Informed Perspective on Dual Diagnosis

This course will provide a trauma-informed perspective on dual diagnosis by asserting that trauma is the primary etiology of addictive disorders. There will be a discussion of the empirical, neurologic, and processing definitions of addiction. This course will explore the term “dual diagnosis” through teleological and operant conditioning perspectives. A cross section image of the brain will be used to illustrate the relationship between the reward pathway and its role in addiction and dual diagnosis disorders. There will be a review of proper screening tools for trauma in the initial assessment phase of patients with substance use disorders. Finally, this course will review ways in which to treat PTSD such as pharmacological treatment and evidenced-based psychotherapeutic modalities (e.g., Trauma-Focused CBT [TFCBT], Non-TFCBT and EMDR).

At the conclusion, the participant will be able to:

1. Discuss trauma as a primary etiology of addictive disorders

2. Explain how to effectively screen for a history of trauma in the assessment of patients with substance use disorders.

3. List which psychotherapeutic modalities and pharmacologic interventions are most effective in the treatment of patients with co-morbid psychiatric and addictive disorders.
