Presentation Title and Description:

"The Impact of the Current Drug Epidemic on the Family"

The U.S. is in the midst of the largest drug epidemic in U.S. history.  Over 70,000 people in the U.S. have died from drug overdoses.  The impact on society as a whole and individual families suffering from addiction is enormous and affects rich and poor alike.  The genetic neurobiological and environmental factors associated with addiction will be presented with emphasis on the bimodal curve which includes both youth and adults.

At the conclusion, the participant will be able to:

-       Describe current neurobiological advances and the understanding of addiction as a brain disease.

-       Discuss early intervention methods in the treatment of adolescent substance abuse.

Dr. Stephanie Brown

Stephanie Brown, Ph.D. is a clinician, author, teacher, researcher, and consultant in the field of addictions. As Founder and Director of The Stanford Alcohol Clinic from 1977 to 1987, she created a program within medicine for treatment, training and research of addiction and its impact on the family. She founded and directs The Addictions Institute in Menlo Park, California, an outpatient psychotherapy clinic built on her theories of addiction and recovery as a developmental process with an integration of trauma and mental health theory and practice. As a Research Associate at the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in Palo Alto, she co-directed The Family Recovery Research Project during the 1990s. In today’s world, she teaches and consults about society’s addiction to technology and the impact of cultural addiction on treatment programs and people in recovery.

A founding member of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (now National Association for Children of Addiction), she is especially well known for her pioneering work in the theory and treatment of adult children of alcoholics and all addicts. She consults and teaches for Options Recovery and serves on the Board of SafeSpace, a nonprofit community program giving voice to teens to promote their mental health.

The author of 11 academic and popular books, plus two training videos (Jaylen Productions, 1997) and a video on family recovery (Hazelden, 2005), Stephanie lectures worldwide. Her latest book, SPEED: Facing Our Addiction to Fast and Faster and Overcoming Our Fear of Slowing Down was published by Berkley Books (an imprint of Penguin) in Jan. 2014.Website: stephaniebrownphd.com

Presentation Title and Description:

"Addiction Treatment and Recovery in an Age of Chaos: Expanding our Clinical Focus to the Family and Community"

Society has lost control in a downward spiral of addiction to a faster pace of life, expressed most clearly through compulsive attachment to technology. From our need to be constantly “connected” and the loss of definable “work hours,” to a demand for instant gratification and the worship of impulse, we are being harmed by our non-stop pursuit of progress and success and our denial of human limits.

Many of the problems traditional psychotherapists and addiction treatment programs see today are linked to, and/or caused by, the chronic fast pace of life that has become an addiction for individuals, families and society.  It is essential for clinicians to recognize that stress disorders of all kinds, anxiety and depression, process addictions such as overeating and overspending, video gaming and social media, and addictions to alcohol and all other drugs, may today be a cause and a consequence of living in a chronically pressured, fast and unregulated society.

What is the impact of this societal loss of control on our understanding of treatment and recovery?  The words “You can’t go home again,” were never more important. Assessment, intervention and treatment

At the conclusion, the participant will be able to:must include the family, our communities and the culture.

1.      List two behavioral, cognitive and affective signs of technology addiction

2.      List the stages in a developmental process of recovery for the family

3.      List the domains of experience in a developmental process of family addiction and recovery
