MEET OUR SPEAKERS:

IAN WOLDS, PSY.D., Executive Director, Alta Mira

Cultivating Personal Agency Through Clinical Practice

The purpose of this presentation is to support clinician’s recognition of the role agency plays as a concept in psychotherapy and how it manifests through the therapeutic relationship in support of our clients’ progress and change. This presentation and discussion will center on the ways clinicians can facilitate the development of agency through different clinical modalities and in different domains in their clients’ lives. Time will also be spent discussing how to apply these concepts in one’s work with specific clinical populations.

Objectives:

At the conclusion, the participant will be able to:

a.      Discuss the importance of cultivating personal agency in support of therapeutic progress.

b.      Identify specific strategies and modalities to facilitate the development of agency in those we serve.

c.      Identify how to apply strategies discussed with specific clinical populations.

BIO:

LAURA NATTA, PH.D., Director of Neuropsychological & Comprehensive Diagnostic Program, Alta Mira

Assessing the Patient in Context: Determining Neurocognitive and Personality Profiles Associated with Substance Abuse

A comprehensive diagnostic assessment is one of the first steps toward a proper diagnosis and successful treatment. In-depth assessment of the individual patient across areas including Neurocognitive, Personality, Psychodiagnostic, Mood and Emotion gives the treating clinician objective results from which to make clinical decisions and plan treatment. In addition to informing medication management on an ongoing basis, comprehensive assessment and diagnosis provides clarity as to aspects of treatment including appropriateness of modality, potential outcomes of specific interventions, and insight into efficacy of aftercare options. Using a combination of didactics, discussion, and case study, this presentation will address the various psychological, personality and neuropsychological aspects of singular mental health and co-occurring disorders—including their impact on assessment, treatment, and implications for continuing care.

Objectives:

At the conclusion, the participant will be able to:

1.     Explain Comprehensive Diagnostic Assessment and can identify and produce more effective and informed treatment for patients and their families.

2.    Explain how to improve their capacity to identify cognitive and personality factors that influence treatment and apply their knowledge to their practices with both the patient as well as their family.

3.     Discuss how neurocognitive and personality profiles associated with psychological disorders have an impact on their patients’ psychodiagnostic profile, as well as the ways that the psychodiagnostic profile can influence the patient’s cognition, family interactions, direct treatment and continuing care.

Creating Resilience and Optimism in Clients and Yourself

The opposite of depression isn’t happiness, it’s resilience. The ability to cope with life’s frustrations without falling apart, and to come back again and again, is at the heart of a happy, fulfilled and connected life. Optimism and resiliency are skills that can be learned. This workshop will focus on breaking down these skills into teachable and actionable items so participants can not only help clients create resiliency and optimism, but also so they can create it within themselves.

Objectives:

At the conclusion, the participant will be able to:

a.      Identify their own levels of optimism/pessimism via Martin Seligman’s Learned Optimism Test

b.      Discuss the pros and cons of optimism versus pessimism and apply these principles to themselves as well as their clients

c.      Recite at least five ways to build optimism and resiliency in clients and themselves

KARLYN PLEASANTS, PSY.D., Executive Clinical Director, Hanbleceya

The Well Siblings: Suffering in Disguise

It is well-known and well-documented the devastating effects mental illness can have on a family. While much of the literature and resources available focus primarily on parents, very little speaks to the influence specifically on siblings. The “Well Sibling Syndrome” is a term created as researchers, mental health experts, and siblings themselves have taken a deeper look into how siblings are affected and shaped by growing up with a brother or sister with a mental illness. This presentation will explore the many ways siblings learn to cope with mental illness in a sibling, how that coping can create a cloak of invisibility, and most importantly, how to thoughtfully include siblings in treatment considerations to effect healing and healthy development across this generation of the family system.

Objectives:

At the conclusion, the participant will be able to:

a.      Differentiate between “subjective” and “objective” burdens of care.

b.      Identify at least 3 areas of development of the “well-sibling” influenced by growing up with a sibling with a mental illness.

c.      List at least 3 suggestions for support given to parents by adult children who grew up with a mentally ill sibling.

BIO:
